Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from carbon. It is treated with oxygen to activate the charcoal. This process makes it more porous and capable of absorbing toxins and substances in the gut.
How does activated charcoal work?
When activated charcoal is ingested it binds toxins together in the gastrointestinal tract and puts a stop to them being absorbed into the dogs system. Due to this activated charcoal has become increasingly popular for dogs that have ingested poison and toxins.
How can you administer activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal can be administered directly into your dog's mouth or it can be added to your dogs food. Activated charcoal needs to be administered as soon as possible after your dog has ingested a toxin.
Vet advice is also very important before giving activated charcoal as with everything there could be side effects.
